Library of the Accademia Nazionale, Rome

The library’s extraordinarily rich and varied collection also includes a small manuscript (44. A. 14; Cors. 17) written in Gothic and decorated with filigree initials, dating from the last decades of the 13th century to the beginning of the following one, which contains the Rule of the Templars, Feasts and Withdrawals (a collection of laws, regulations and customs observed in the Templar communities) in French translation. It is the only known vernacular translation of the Latin text approved at the Council of Troyes in 1129, although translations may have existed in other languages.

The structure and characteristics of the codex and the texts it contains have led researchers to hypothesise that it comes from a house of the Order, which was located in the south of France or, alternatively, in the Latin East. In this case, however, the work cannot be dated beyond 1291, the date of the fall of Acre.
