Published by the Municipality of Tomar, March 1, 2020, 860th anniversary of the Foundation of Tomar, as part of the Route of the Knights Templar and the commemoration of the 900th anniversary of the Foundation of the Order of the Knights Templar.
This exhibition was conceived in 2012 by the Department of Aube, on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the dissolution of the Templar Order (1312-2012). It retraces the history of these men engaged in a life that was both spiritual and military. This journey to the heart of the Middle Ages underlines the leading role of the Champenois in the Order of the Templars, who combined chivalry and a life of poverty between East and West.
This exhibition allows us to go back to the origin of the Order in the Holy Land, during the first crusades. A military and religious order, the Knights Templar combined chivalry and a life of poverty between East and West. On their return to France, their network allowed them to develop and enrich themselves. But too powerful, they became a shadow for the Pope and the King of France. The latter therefore decided to dissolve the Order. Part of the exhibition is also devoted to the imagination that the Knights Templar can generate, and in particular its famous treasure, which has never been found until now.
