2019 Scientific symposium in Perugia – November 2019

« Gli ordini di Terrasanta, questioni aperte nuove acquisizioni »

The scientific meeting of 2019 was held on November 14 and 15 in Perugia (IT). The international scientific conference “Gli ordini di Terrasanta: questioni aperte, nuove acquisizioni” (Orders of the Holy Land, open questions, new acquisitions), organized by the City and the Department of Letters of the University of Perugia, brought together 26 renowned European experts in the very prestigious setting of the Salla dei Notari of the Perugia’s city hall.

The City of Perugia built on its previous experiences in international conferences and seminars for the organization of the symposium. In collaboration with the TREF scientific committee, the group of experts wished to deepen the genesis and the political and institutional evolution of the Orders of the Holy Land, including Teutons, Hospitallers and Templars. A specific section on the figurative arts provided the keys to reading the illustrations of the Orders of the Holy Land spread in Europe and in the East. The issue of the Templar trial, fuelled by the most recent discoveries, closed the symposium.

The programme included 4 conference sessions which each brought together 80 to 120 people.

Session 1 – Genesis and evolution of the Orders of the Holy Land: from the conquest of Jerusalem to the battle of Lepanto
Session 2 – The Orders of the Holy Land and the Figurative Arts
Session 3 – The Templar trial: the protagonists
Session 4 – The Templar trial: the procedures
